4 Tips to Stop Overeating

By: Alex Fazzari

Do you ever find yourself eating past the point of being full and suffering from that overindulgent stomach ache? While indulging in moderation is a healthy practice for a balanced lifestyle, consistently eating more than what your body requires could be counterproductive to your fitness goals. Do you want that toned, strong summer body, or do you want to feel regretful when the summer rolls around that you did not stick to your dietary goals? The choice is yours! Use these four tips to stop overeating at each meal/snack.

1. Hydrate: Sometimes, when we feel hungry, it is just our body indicating that it needs hydration. Making a conscious effort to stay hydrated throughout the day can help you stop snacking too often in between meals. Further, drinking a full glass of water before and during a meal will help you feel fuller and satisfied.

2. Put Food on a Plate: or in a bowl. Place a serving of the food or snack you are eating on a plate or in a bowl and put the rest away. This will ensure that you are eating the appropriate amount and discourage you from taking more spoonfuls just because it is in front of you. Often, people eat because food is there, not because they are hungry.

3. Stay fueled: Stay fueled throughout the day with small and nutritious meals or snacks. Letting yourself get to the point of feeling starved and ravenous often leads to gorging at meals and feeling sick afterward. If you have some carrots or a protein bar 45 minutes before a meal to keep you tied over, this won't happen!

4. Put the Utensils down: Slow down your meals! Consciously put down the utensils between each bite and chew fully before the next one. This helps with digestion and feeling more satisfied. Eating too quickly does not allow the body to fully register the satiation it is receiving. Your body sends hormonal signals to the brain to feel full, and it is theorized that eating too quickly decreases the effectiveness of that complex hormonal pathway.
